GEM scones

for anyone that's new - these are old family recipes from mum's handwritten notebooks - the kind of things I grew up on as a kid and she grew up on when she was a kid - enjoy!

1 tablespoon butter
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
1 large cup self raising flour
1/2 cup milk
vanilla

Cream butter, sugar and vanilla. Add milk and egg, then sifted flour.

Have gem irons heated and greased. Cook in hot oven about 10 minutes.

  1. My mum made these as well, she also made 'drop scones' which were scones dropped into boiling water to cook, sweet dumplings really.

I remember 'midnight' feasts of them, hot from the pot and smothered with golden syrup, thanks for reminding me of that pleasure :)

  2. Tried these tonight after picking up the scone tray for 50c at a fair on the weekend, they are absolutely scrumptious, I may have eaten half a tray on my own while tipping them out! Thanks for posting. Also found a recipe in the Commonsense Cookery book so I'll try that next time.
